φρήν
PHREN: Where Heart Meets Mind
An ancient word. A modern family. A company built on both.
What the Ancients Knew
In ancient Greece, the word PHREN (φρήν) didn't refer to the brain. It referred to something deeper – the midriff, the diaphragm, the parts around the heart.
To the Greeks, this was where true understanding lived. Not cold logic in the head, but wisdom that came from feeling. Mind and heart, working as one.
PHREN meant intellect, understanding, feelings, wits, and purpose – all bound together in a single word. The ancients knew what we sometimes forget: the best decisions come when thinking and feeling align.
When we chose our name, we chose this meaning deliberately. Supporting bereaved families requires more than process and procedure. It requires understanding that comes from the heart.
Heart and Mind, Family and Purpose
The two meanings of PHREN aren't separate. They're the same thing.
The Greeks understood that wisdom lives in the heart. Our family taught us that love requires action. Put them together and you have our philosophy:
Understanding that feels. Support that thinks.
We don't just process paperwork. We listen. We don't just provide information. We care. We bring the rigour of professional standards and the warmth of people who understand what families are going through.
Because we know. PHREN is personal.
What PHREN Means in Practice
Understanding
From the Greek: intellect, wits
We take time to understand each family's situation. No assumptions. No one-size-fits-all. Every family is different, and we adapt our support to what they actually need.
Feeling
From the Greek: the heart, emotion
We're not a call centre. We're people who care. Our team are trained in safeguarding and supported by dedicated safeguarding leadership, because we know that bereaved families need more than information – they need compassion.
Purpose
From the Greek: decision-making, action
We don't just sympathise. We help. Practical support, real savings, actual entitlements claimed. Understanding and feeling, turned into action that makes a difference.
From One Family to Every Family
What started as a personal mission – named for family, inspired by an ancient word – has grown into something larger.
In the first evaluated phase of our Liverpool pilot alone, we supported 149 bereaved people, helped secure £105,671 in one-off payments and £129,632 in new annual income, and saved an average of around £900 on attended funerals.
But every statistic represents a family. Every pound saved is less stress during grief. Every entitlement claimed is one less worry for someone already carrying enough.
PHREN isn't just where we started. It's why we keep going.
